“Ernest & Celestine”
From the creators of former Branchage favourite THE SECRET OF KELLS comes the visually stunning and enormously entertaining 2014 Oscar nominee (Best Animated Feature) ERNEST & CELESTINE.
Deep below snowy, cobblestone streets, tucked away in networks of winding subterranean tunnels, lives a civilization of hardworking mice, terrified of the bears who live above ground. Unlike her fellow mice, Celestine is an artist and a dreamer – and when she nearly ends up as breakfast for ursine troubadour Ernest, the two form an unlikely bond. But it isn’t long before their friendship is put on trial by their respective bear-fearing and mice-eating communities.
Ernest & Celestine joyfully leaps across genres and influences to capture the kinetic, limitless possibilities of animated storytelling. Like a gorgeous watercolor painting brought to life, a constantly shifting pastel color palette bursts and drips across the screen, while wonderful storytelling and brilliant comic timing draw up influences as varied as Buster Keaton and Bugs Bunny!
Supporting Short: FORGET ME NOT, Kim Noce, 3 min
A little fairytale of a child and her imaginary friends, recalled by an old woman drifting into bygone memories.
The festival’s embryonic raison d’être. When Xanthe Hamilton first envisioned Branchage, film and music were to be the two foundation stones on which the festival’s incredible, diverse and exciting programming were to be built.
Since then the festival has established a peerless reputation in both fields, creating events that have pushed the boundaries of what concert, festival or film-goers can expect – namely real, life-affirming experiences through the arts.
